The kernel was the PAE version: Oct 23 07:59:03 retsol610 yum[2861]: Installed: kernel-PAE-devel-3.6.2-1.fc16.i686 On powering up the laptop this morning, GRUB showed the 3.6 kernel ok, but once selected, the screen just went blank (completely black) and the disc light showed no activity.
