The performance gains are incredible, from startup to shutdown, and everything inbetween. Although I won't get into the specifics, unloading the *buntu middle man really makes a difference. The CPU gadget in the top panel shows only 1 dark column to the left of the graph (apparently 1 per CPU/core, as my desktop machine appropriately shows 4 columns). (HowTos)

I logged into it once and now when I turn my laptop on or off I always see the Xubuntu loading/closing splash screen no matter which desktop environment I log in to (or out of). (Hardware)
