[ubuntu] state of open source ATI driver vs. the closed driver for 'old' cards?view story

http://ubuntuforums.org – I wonder what the state / performance of the open source ATI driver is now, when compared to the closed source driver for 'old' cards. currently, I'm stuck with Ubuntu 8.10, as that's the last edition that comes with the 'old' ATI drivers, that support my ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 card. (which is 'old' according to ATI/AMD, even though it's a 3 year old top-of-the-line card). (Hardware)

[ubuntu] Boot right into Ubuntuview story

http://ubuntuforums.org – Is there a way I can boot straight into ubuntu rather than going into the grub menu. I don't really care about memtest and recovery mode. I want to go right to ubuntu! Is that possible  I'm on Grub2 with Karmic using the ext4 file-system. Any help would be appreciated :KS  (Hardware)

Jolicloud :Dview story

http://www.linuxforums.org – I installed jolicloud today on my netbook and so far I absolutely love it. My sdd is only 4 gigs (and this is a brand spaking new netbook!) so my choice in OS's were limited. Tried windows but after installing it and my system drivers, had only 200mbs of free space left. horrible. Tried ubuntu but I didnt find it very user friendly...I am new to linux. (HowTos)

[ubuntu] Please help! Replacing graphics card...view story

http://ubuntuforums.org – Hi, I hope I'm OK posting this here, since it's really a question about hardware and not Ubuntu. I'm traveling in Vietnam, and my laptop has developed a serious graphics problem. Basically, anything involving hi-res graphics freezes the computer, but I can still boot in text-only mode and everything works fine. So it would seem to be the graphics card, right? (Hardware)
