X not working on new install of 12.04view story

I have so far tried Debian live disks... gnome, kde, xfce. Mint 15 & LMDE. Ubuntu 12.04 & 13.04. The transparency isn't normal and the borders don't align properly. Below is an image I took showing that this is the case. Ubuntu stuck on bootview story

Sometimes though, it just keeps flashing, and the system doesn't start. If I try to boot in recovery mode, I can see the text log instead. From there, it gets stuck at a few common points.
