How can I stop my Linux machine from broadcasting its name on the network?view story

http://unix.stackexchange.com – I have a Linksys router and I've noticed that when I look for connected PC's on the router, the name of my computer and MAC address of the wireless device appears. However, I've noticed that for some devices it appears only the device MAC address, without a name. For example, Apple computers connected to the router appear without a name. (HowTos)

dnsmasq & Tomato - Elminate the need for a trailing dot for name resolutionview story

http://serverfault.com – I realize that a trailing dot after a hostname is technically "correct", but it's a pain in the butt to type and is unintuitive for non-technical users. I had DDWRT on a Linksys router of mine many, many years ago, and it resolved local hostnames via dnsmasq without the trailing dot. However, having just installed Tomato onto my Asus N66U, trailing dots are always required. (HowTos)

Port forwarding not working despite DMZ and bridged modemview story

http://serverfault.com – So I'm trying to set up SSH access to a friend's server, and we've learned from his ISP (SureWest) that their modem is bridged. Next, the router (Linksys E2000) was set up for port forwarding. No outside access. We then tried DMZ to the server's IP. No go. Then, we flashed the router with DD-WRT, still convinced it was a router issue. (HowTos)
