Expanding horizons with a 10 distro testview story

http://www.unix.com – As it said, if you don't know where to post, post it here. :-) **I have been running Linux now for many years but I am an amateur compared to many gurus. There is a big difference in using an OS and really knowing the OS. I started off with Debian for about 6 months, Gentoo for a couple of years, and Ubuntu for about three years. (HowTos)

On the Retina MacBook Proview story

http://forums.fedoraforum.org – Anyone on this list that has, or is thinking about buying the Retina display MacBook Pro and wants to run any form of Linux on it, should watch the progress of what Greg Kroah-Hartman is doing to get it working on this hardware. He has just announced that he has managed to get Gentoo booting directly into the EFI on Google +. (HowTos)

Installing Fedora 17 using USB pendrives on UEFI systemview story

http://forums.fedoraforum.org – Hi all, Just got a new ultrabook laptop (Asus Zenbook Prime UX31a) and I want to install Fedora 17 on it while maintaining Windows 7 (for now). My first attempts at installing it failed after messing with the disk partitions, resulting in the laptop not booting anymore. (HowTos)

Printing using a VirtualBox guest in Linuxview story

http://serverfault.com – I have a printer setup, which is a bit awkward. The printers are exported by a SMB host using the printer sharing feature. However the shared printers are not seen by my Linux system (gentoo). Using the SMBClient I can list them, but any attempt to install these printers within cups failed. I also have a Windows system, which is running within a VirtualBox instance. (HowTos)

xvd device support with Gentoo running in Xen HVM guestview story

http://serverfault.com – I'm trying to install Gentoo into a Xen HVM guest. Everything went fine with the install up to the point where you do the grub-install. Apparently, grub does not know about block devices labeled "xvd" (see https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=424343). (HowTos)

Safely uninstall a package in Gentooview story

http://unix.stackexchange.com – I wanted to uninstall a specific package in Gentoo and browsed through the emerge man page. I found the --unmerge option: WARNING: This action can remove important packages! Removes all matching packages. This does no checking of dependencies, so it may remove packages necessary for the proper operation of your system. Its arguments can be atoms or ebuilds. (HowTos)
