http://stackoverflow.com – I'm looking for suggestions around the notion of securing a Linux host in 2013... Historically I've used aspects of the following but it's been a while since I've thought about these matters and it may be time to shore up those defenses again! Securing a Linux host: Disable all insecure protocols (telnet, pop, etc) and restrict shell access to ssh2. Disable root remote log into the shell. Limi (HowTos)

Ubuntu Server 12.04: How does one configure the firewall during installation?view story

http://serverfault.com – I'm following instructions to automate the installation of Ubuntu Server 12.04 using kickstart. It works well for automatically partitioning the drives, selecting languages etc. However, it doesn't configure the firewall. It is a known issue. Running without a firewall isn't a good idea. Is there a rule for iptables to limit the amount of SYN packets a /24 range of IPs can send?view story

http://askubuntu.com – How can I block entire C class IP blocks when they send too many SYN packets to my ubuntu 12.04 server? Example of what I see during a SYN flood attack: Each different IP only sends 1 SYN packet, so the firewall doesn't block it. But the range 192.132.209.* all together is sending a lot of SYN packets in a very small time period. (HowTos)
