I can't trace it to any particular event, it seems to happen randomly. I think the problem started when I tried installing ktts (the text to speech engine) but I cannot be sure. Check System -> Preferences -> Sound -> Sound Prefereences output tab to be sure the correct output device is selected. It changed randomly with the last yum kernel update. (HowTos)
