Google + Linux + MySpace = gOS Space

admin on August 2nd, 2008 | File Under Linux ariticles, Recommended -

A few months ago I posted about a Linux distro called gOS, the Google-Linux distro. To refresh things, gOS is based on the most widely acclaimed Ubuntu Linux and integrates all Google services like GMail, Google News, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google Maps, YouTube and Blogger into the distro for one-click access. Back then, gOS was based on the Enlightenment E17 window manager, with no support for KDE or Gnome. Now gOS is available in three different versions - gOS Rocket E, which is the Enlightenment based version, gOS Rocket G which is based on Gnome and another fresh one called gOS Space which includes MySpace applications for photos, music, movies, TV etc.

LinuxConsole 1.0.2008 released

admin on July 13th, 2008 | File Under Linux news, Recommended -

This ‘1.0.2008′ release has been buildt from a new toolchain based on gcc 4.2.2 and glibc 2.7. The 2.4 kernel is also not available for that releas, but you can continue using 2007 ISOs if you have to install linuxconsole on very old computers.

The kernel is 2.6.25.4, patched with squashfs (module format for linuxconsole) and aufs (can write on modules)

Since bootsplash is obsolete, usplash replaces it.

GNOME is available in 2.20 release, since it’s very stable, an update to 2.22 will be available soon.

KDE is in 3.5.9 release, but not present on CD (not enough disk space). You can install it with modules manager or wait the ‘DVD’ release.

Mplayer 1.0rc2 has DVD navigation support built-in. Read more...

Mandriva Linux 2009 Alpha 2 released

admin on July 11th, 2008 | File Under Linux news, Recommended -

Mandriva is proud to announce the release of Mandriva Linux 2009 Spring Alpha 2, marking the first public pre-release of the upcoming Mandriva Linux 2009. This alpha introduces several significant changes, most obviously the inclusion of KDE 4 - 4.1 beta 2, specifically - as the default version of KDE, and the latest development version of GNOME, 2.23.4. The kernel has also been updated to release 2.6.26rc7. We emphasize that the KDE change is a major one that is not yet entirely completed and likely to cause many bugs. As always - but more importantly than ever - we remind you not to use pre-releases in any critical situation; install them only on a test system or partition, or in a virtual machine. Additionally, we strongly discourage using this pre-release to upgrade from any earlier release of Mandriva Linux, as the transition process from KDE 3 to KDE 4 is not yet fully implemented and you are likely to end up with an unusable system. Tips and tricks: How do I enable the login shell in Gnome Terminal?

admin on July 8th, 2008 | File Under Linux ariticles, Recommended -

By default, gnome-terminal does not spawn a login shell. To use a login shell for all gnome-terminal windows for a particular user in gnome-terminal, you can use gnome-terminal preferences dialog:

Edit” -> “Current Profile” -> “Title and Command” and select “Run command as a login shell

Alternatively, using the command line tool “gconftool-2″ will achieve the same result:

# gconftool-2 --type boolean --set /apps/gnome-terminal/profiles/Default/login_shell true

To set this as a default option for all users, use gconftool-2 to set the default value of the key
