I know that zigbee allows you to have a scalable address length, is it possible to program a zigbee device to use a star network only and have a fixed address length and number of bytes?

What would be the best way to interface an RFID module (we are using the EM-18 module) so that it transmits the tag info through a Zigbee network (we are using the Tarang F4 modules which are similar to the old Digibee modules)?
Would it be better to use a microcontroller in between as an interface between the two? Or directly connect the EM-18 out into the F4 in and then transmit it too?
