As we all know, all ubuntu 12.04.2 based distros ship with kernel 3.5 instead of 3.2, 12.04 and 12.04.1 were shipped with. I had installed Xubuntu 12.04 when it was first released and I am doing all the necessary updates up to now and everything gets updated except for the kernel. I have installed a non-rpm custom kernel. I have a cron job which does yum -y update in the background. Is it sufficent to remove the kernel packages to prevent them from being updated?

The new updated Linux Kernel version 2.6.37 is now available for download. If you are still using the older Linux Kernel, it is highly recommend to update to this latest version 2.6.37. You can find many tutorial on how to install or update the Linux Kernel to the latest 2.6.37.

You cannot run kmod-nvidia with a non-CentOS kernel. You will need to download the proprietary binary drivers from nVidia and install those and then reinstall them every time you update your kernel. [by TrevorH]
