I used ubuntu before this jump. i have installed fedora just now . i need software packages which i used in ubuntu. to install vlc , i hit following command on terminal : $ yum install vlc Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit You need to be root to perform this command. a) how do i become root in fedora ? b) I have given a password during installation.But the password is not prompted after hitting that command. I think my user account do not have or missing some administrator level previllages. Please help me to clear it . Procee (HowTos)

I want to get rid of the automatically installed solitaire "games" in my brand new Fedora 18. I tried the gnome way, but nothing gets listed when I search for "silitaire". I tried the command line way:

$ su -c 'yum remove *solitaire' Password: Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit No Match for argument: *solitaire No Packages marked for removal

PackageKit is nor running from a termina, it responds with "Comand not found"

when trying to install it using yum, it returns the following

[root@localhost /]# yum install PackageKit Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit Package PackageKit-0.8.7-1.fc18.x86_64 already installed and latest version Nothing to do

any suggestions?

I have Installed Fedora 17 in CLI mode Only. Then I wanted To install MC and tried this command yum install mc and it appeared some case of errors,

error:

Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit Error: Cannot retrieve metalink for repository: fedora.

I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04. I installed with one user account, then added a second user account using the GUI dialog box method, making myself an Administrator type.

I now use the second user account. When using update manager and it needs to add or remove packages, it asks me for the "password for root" rather than my own password.

i installed fedora 17 when i install packages like

sudo yum install gstreamer

it gives me

Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit Error: requested datatype primary not available

also i tried installing adobe flash from .rpm file it gave me same error from yumbackend.py

please help

I just installed ubuntu on my netbook and am loving it!!

What I’m now trying to do is set up my root account. I tried to run the following command at a command prompt:

su root

and use the password for the main account i set up during the install process. but that didn't work.

I installed Skype on my Fedora 17 64-bit. The icon comes down bottom right. I can't see the icon in the applications. I knew I messed up something while installation. Hence I want to do it again. I tried uninstalling by yum remove skype. I keep getting this error.
