In short, if you are to purchase a Windows 8 PC in the near future, you will be able to install your favorite Linux distro on it. It has never been a problem to install Linux alongside with Windows on store-bought Windows computers. However, Microsoft makes it more difficult with Windows 8 because Microsoft insists that all PCs that ship with Windows 8 will have to use UEFI ( which Mac computers have been using for years instead of the good old BIOS, and the UEFI secure boot wi (Distributions)

Hello I want to install Ubuntu 12.10 on an UEFI machine with manual partitioning.

Do I have to disable "Secure Boot"? Do I have to create a 2nd ESP (EFI System Partition) for Ubuntu? Do I have to give it the boot flag? Do I have to set mount point /boot/efi? Do I have to install grub on /dev/sda?

I am used to BIOS installation where:

/dev/sda1 100 MB Windows 7 hidden System Partition /dev/sd

I have a OEM Windows 8 Sony Vaio E-series. Tried dual booting Linux Secure Remix (Ubuntu 12.10) with EFI having followed the instructions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI

Disabled Secure-boot.

No option in BIOS to disable fast-boot.

Ran Boot-Repair with recommended conditions and restarted.

I am trying to get ubuntu to dual boot with windows 8 on my notebook. Whenever I boot up, it goes directly to windows. The notebook is a lenovo z580 that came preloaded with windows 7. I did a clean install for windows 8.

I upgraded my PC from Windows 7 to Windows 8, and wanted to reinstall Ubuntu onto the windows filesystem via wubi. However, I read in many places that Windows 8 causes many new problems with the installation through WUBI, and doesn't work on computers pre-installed with Windows 8 because of a problem in the BiOS or something of that sort. Does it work on computers that were upgraded to Windows 8?

I am new to Linux and fairly new to computers. My laptop is an ASUS N56V and has UEFI BIOS (I did not know this ahead of time). I downloaded fedora 17 to a live CD and set my BIOS to run the disk drive first. Went and installed fedora 17 as dual boot so I could still use windows by shrinking the windows partition and then using the free space for fedora.
