Have been running Ubuntu on my desktop since 9.something... now on 11.04, but have not done any updates for a LONG time... I saw Unity and decided I wanted no part of that! I have a laptop that I installed Xubuntu 12.04 on, and like the Xubuntu MUCH better than Ubuntu... So, decided that I would put Xubuntu on the desktop.
I am now running ubuntu 10.04. I am reading good things about 12.04, and it is a LTS so I think I am going to upgrade. I have been happy with ubuntu. Is there any reason to switch to xubuntu ? What are the advantages of xubuntu ?
I'm newbie with ubuntu, I tried to install ubuntu, at the beginning xubuntu work for the first upgrade to xubuntu 12.04, but after the reboot, no winxp media center ether Xubuntu won't start and I have a screen Ctrl+Alt+Del nothing else. I read a little about, maybe the sata enabled on the bios.
I am going to assume Xubuntu is the best choice in my situation.
Kubuntu 12.04 worked fine on an older computer, but it was evident that 12.10 was too much for it. So, I decided to put Xubuntu on instead, and it loads faster, but it's Xubuntu 12.04.
Now, I am trying to upgrade to 12.10, and I don't see the option to do this.
As the title says, a very simple question;
What is the difference between a Xubuntu and an Ubuntu with XFCE (Xubuntu-Desktop packages) installed?
Is there only a difference in installed packages and default applications, or are there other differences as well?
And would there be any reason to install Ubuntu with the Xubuntu-Desktop packages rather than Xubuntu itself?
Thanks.
I was quite sure myself that it's not possible to switch from a 32-bit to a 64-bit Ubuntu without a clean re-install, and of course there is a popular question titled Is it possible to “upgrade” from a 32bit to a 64bit installation?, answers to which unanimously suggest that the easiest way is to do a clean re-install.
Then I saw this question, where the OP says they upgraded from Ubuntu 11.10 (3
So I finally checked to see if I could upgrade to 12.04.1 through the update manager and it's there saying I can upgrade. I already upgraded from 8.04 to 10.04 so I'm thinking about going to 12.04. This is, my PC is pretty old. It has about 600MB or RAM so would that be enough?
I had a PC that had about 2GB of RAM, but it died. Funny how newer PC's seem to crap out more than the old ones.
Hello dear ubuntu community,
so i was really excited to upgrade but i'm facing a really major issue right now and i'm hoping people can help me out.
We were very happy with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and we converted all our users to Ubuntu. Most of our users are 35-50 year old and these people use their computers for routine tasks for the last 5 years. We did some test and the result was clear nobody liked Unity and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and everybody felt in love with XFCE and Xubuntu 12.04 LTS. So, we migrated all our machines to Xubuntu 12.04 LTS.
