I'm using a Supermicro X9SRE-3F motherboard with the latest BIOS and 2x 4TB drives connected to the on-board SATA controller.
If I set the BIOS to RAID and create a RAID 1 array, the array shows up in the BIOS as 3.6TB.
I have 4 2TB hard drives and I was thinking about using Raid 10. This would give me 4TB correct? My next question is would it be easy to add more hard drives to the raid array. For example if I bought another hard drive can I add it to the array without backing up any data?
Basically I want to be able to start off with 4TB and when the space becomes full add more space as needed.
When a hard disk drive in one of my Linux machines failed, I took the opportunity to migrate from RAID5 to a 6-disk software RAID6 array.
At the time of the migration I did not have all 6 drives - more specifically the fourth and fifth (slots 3 and 4) drives were already in use in the originating array, so I created the RAID6 array with a couple of missing devices.
I have just flashed my BIOS and now my machine does not detect my raid5 array! It has three 2TB drives in it so that is a LOT of data that will be lost!
I have NOT deleted the array and it does not offer me to reboot
I'm using Nvidia MediaShield! and Windows 7. Any ideas guys? Thanks!

I have a raid array of hard drives in a Sun x4600 that need to be moved out, and another Sun x4600 ready to accept those hard drives.
The problem is: in my limited experience with servers, it seems like hard drives added to a server always get wiped by the raid controller because the controller insists on "initializing" drives before recognizing them as a raid array.

I have a 5 disk Raid5 array of Western Digital Green (WD10EADS) 1TB. Raid5 is via Windows Server (software raid).
One disk has failed, and it looks as though I can't get the same model replacement. I've also read that the newer (consumer level) WD alternatives will misbehave in a Raid array (TLER issues etc).
The array has been powered up for 29,000 hours (3.2 years).
Hoping someone can help...
Here is my setup:
4x Western Digital 1TB drives
- 200GB RAID 0 (Windows 7 and Apps / Games)
- 1.8TB RAID 10 (Data)
Both arrays use all 4 disks.
Ubuntu has its own 80GB drive (/dev/sde).
I have a motherboard with an NVIDIA raid controller on it. I used to use it until it became unstable.
