In Linux, there are so many choices, and this includes the desktop environments and window managers. Four of the most popular desktop environments in Linux are GNOME, KDE, XFCE, and LXDE. All four offer sophisticated point-and-click graphical user interfaces (GUI) which are on par with the desktop environments found in Windows and Mac OS X.
Xfce, LXDE, and other desktop environments are often referenced as being lighter-eight Linux desktop environments than KDE and GNOME, but what are the measurable performance differences between them? Curious how much of a quantitative impact the GNOME, KDE, Xfce, and LXDE desktops have on netbook s...
Hi there.
I'm planning to install ubuntu in an old computer (512MB of RAM) and I want it to have xfce as its DE. So a question arised:
Which of the following options would be lighter for that pc: Xubuntu or Ubuntu Server + xfce ?
Any recomendations are very welcome!
PS: I want to use xfce (not gnome, kde, lxde, etc.)
Thanks!!!
Well what do you use? I use KDE GNOME Shell XFCE LXDE and MATE. I like them all. Primarily I use gnome shell for average everyday use. When I'm showing off linux capabilities KDE or MATE. Slow day with the computer? XFCE or LXDE depending on how much of a tweaked desktop I want.
XFCE is heavily Tweaked and LXDE is pretty much the same usual way it looked when I installed it.
Ultimate Edition 2.7 is already here, just one month after the previous release. The short development cycle is due to the fact that Ultimate Edition (UE) 2.7 is pretty much a polished version of Ultimate Edition 2.6. However, it comes with a lot more choices in desktop environments on top of the GNOME option. Fans of KDE, XFCE or LXDE will enjoy h...
I must get this out first off. I do not want to start any flame wars. I have absolutely nothing against the GNOME project. But with all of the backlash from the Linux community and the market share of Linux desktops using Gnome 3, why does Fedora still insist on making it the default desktop?
Is there any reason why I should use XFCE rather than LXDE? LXDE uses less memory and is more lightweight. I am going to use Compiz with Emerald anyway. Is there any reason for using XFCE then?

The title is quite exhaustive: is there a way to retrieve the desktop environment name (e.g. gnome, unity, xfce, lxde, kde...) from command line or python?
Need something to play with over the weekend? The OpenSUSE 11.3 release is the first ever to include the OpenSUSE LXDE flavor. LXDE version 0.5.5 is included on the OpenSUSE DVD along with other desktop options KDE, GNOME, and XFCE.
