I have written a shell script that creates a backup of my MySQL database.

When I perform a backup from recovery (or via a front-end such as ROM Manager), what exactly is saved?
Is it like a clone of a hard drive in the PC world?
Does it contain only data, and not the actual ROM?
How should I go about using such a backup when doing a restore? Should a ROM be installed first, followed by the restore?
I currently have a Deja Dup Backup utility in Ubuntu 12.04 to run scheduled backups every day but the backup never runs. The Overview tab always reports "Most recent backup: n days ago" and "Next automatic backup: Today". I can run a backup on demand no problem so as far as I can tell it's not a network availability issue or a permissions issue. It just appears not to run on schedule.
Our NetVault license is about to expire within the next year, so what alternatives are there on Linux?
We have 20TB and many millions of files, so time on the backup window is important.
The backup is done to tape, where a full backup is done once a week and incremental each day.
The data is /home.
Amanda Enterprise have NDMP, so that could be an option.
Are there other fast options for Linux
Hard drive backups are like the socks of gifts you give yourself. They’re initially about as unexciting as gifts can get, only to become the best gift ever in a pinch. Got a meeting in 20 minutes and your normal sock reserve is empty? Thanks for the bag-o-socks, Uncle Steve! Your hard drive just exploded, taking the past 3 years of your digital life with it?
I have about twenty servers with different webapps. Every 4 hours runs rsnapshot task and backs up all of them to a backup server.
Accidentally today I discovered that backup failed last 4 days due to input/output failure in file system.
I have some servers and VPSs to many companies across the world. I want to back them up locally. I have some backup solutions enabled to remote hosts, but I want to have a local backup on a computer at home.
What I am thinking is:
Create a virtualbox virtual machine, install the same version linux as the server.
Use rsync to backup the server to the local virtualbox machine.
My situation is this:
I have some servers/VPS around the world (primarily web hosting servers).
I have some backup stuff from one server to the other it works ok, but these are CPANEL/DirectAdmin rsync backups.
But I want to have some backup at home, for the whole system.
