I rooted it about 6 months ago, but I have stayed on stock and just frozen and deleted some of the bloatware apps. Can I just do a regular factory data reset? I am concerned because of rumors that it might brick your phone?

1. Does malware require to root your phone in order for it to work? Or can it steal your information without rooting?

So I got a replacement Thunderbolt in the mail from Verizon. First thing I rooted it and got S-OFF. However, now when I turn it on, it gets to the green HTC logo, but when it plays the thunderbolt sound the screen is black. Then the screen stays black.
I am very new to the whole rooting and roms for android phones. I dont know much terminology such as kernels..etc. so you would have to explain things very carefully for me haha.
Recently I rooted my evo 3d phone.
First lets understand what a factory reset does. It removes all USER DATA and restores the phone back to factory settings providing that the phone is not rooted. User data is defined as apps, call logs, contacts, and anything else the user has placed in the phones memory. Stuff that is on the SDCARD is not affected by a factory reset.
I don't know what went wrong but when I tried to unlock the screen this morning, the touchscreen didn't respond. I tried to factory reset by boot recovery but I can't select the option "wipe data/factory reset" with power button. I hadn't activated the option 'usb debugging', so I can't use android sdk to factory reset either.
I tried to flash a rom on my e973 and i factory reset,wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, formatted system and went to flash the room but i clicked the wrong thing (CWM) and it froze. so i went to reboot and when i did it shows the lg logo comes on for a second, the screen goes black and then turns off. I can't get into download mode either... help!
