http://serverfault.com – I've got a large disk (500GB) but am deciding to free up space - got 249GB left, so that's 49.8% of the disk left, if my calculations are right. I'm planning on install of Adobe Photoshop and (possibly) graphic design apps, so have decided to free up some space. I also have a local WAMP install for testing too. Also stored are some films - around 3-4GB, saved from DVB-TV install. Using WinRAR I plan to compress the original folders, which are named: HTML backups (my original HTML files that I made for testing purposes - that's over 2 GB) Public domain images (mainly JPEGs, some GIF and PN (HowTos)

How to mount compressed disk image?

Here is my situation: I have hard drive with (fresh) OS installation. I made compressed image of that disk to another disk.

How to make compressed disk image to file (on another disk): sudo cat /dev/sdb | gzip > disk.img.gz (sdb is source)

If free space is zero-ed, compression is much better.

I have moved to Ubuntu 12 and chosen to use full disk encryption (encrypted LVM).

So now I'm wondering: should I shred (eg: with secure-delete package, srm) the free disk space to remove any remnant windows might have left?

Is free disk space treated any different?

/boot low on disk space 25 weeks 1 day ago

I see the following error while trying run the command shown below. I read somewhere that my /boot partition is low on disk space. How can I increase the size of the /boot partition so I can install more software?

I have a FC 17 daul boot with win7 I tried to delete 4G Image file which was located in my NTFS disk by right clicking on it and deleteing it in fedora. it disapear but disk space left the same as before How can I return my lost space?

An NTFS volume might sometimes misreport free disk space. This primarily occurs since NTFS supports several file-level and volume features. To solve such problems, you might need to reformat the volume and use backup to restore lost files and folders. One should use file recovery utility in case if backup fails to restore.
