Why does Ubuntu ignore my xorg.conf?

http://askubuntu.com – Hi my Ubuntu has developed a strange problem. It just ignores my xorg setting and falls back to what I presume is a hardware default setting. In more detail when I do a clean install it automatically sets my resolution to 1920x1080i @60hz, I then change this to 1920x1080p @60hz but this causes the resolution to set its self to 1920x1080i @50hz after a reboot, and then no matter what I set the xorg to it always boots at this resolution. I can change the setting in the nvidia-settings dialog (yes I have ran it as root) but it never saves my setting and falls back to this resolution. Heres som (HowTos)

I have set my xorg.conf to out put at 1080p 60hz but when I boot it always chooses 1080i 50hz and I do not know why.

Can any one tell me if i am doing something wrong ?

The X11 log below shows a problem: First, the resolution is set to "1920x1080@50p" which is great. The login dialog seems to be fine at 1920x1080@50p. After I login, the resolution changes to "1920x1080_60". The mode "1920x1080_60" is NOT even defined in my xorg.conf. I only have ModeLine and Mode defined for "1920x1080@50p". I wonder who is setting the other mode ("1920x1080_60")?

I am having trouble setting the correct resolution on my external monitor via HDMI

I have the gen3 Sandy Bridge processor with an Nvidia card. After I installed the Nvidia driver I got 640x800 resolution on my laptop monitor, but was able to set 1080p on my external monitor.

I have an TV screen which I would like to attach to my laptop with the right resolution. Just because this is basic stuff I searched and found a lot about the xorg.conf file, modelines and so on.

My Screen has a resolution of 1920 to 1080 pixels and I created this xorg.conf

But in the nvidia settings no trace of this resolution appears.

What is wrong about this? Any Ideas?

So now that /etc/X11/xorg.conf isn't being used, where can I specify the display resolution, such as 800x600? I used to do it in a kickstart, but now I don't know where this setting is... [by jpeery]

It's been a while since I've used Ubuntu, and back then I was running an old Gateway MX3215 with a piece of junk UniChrome card. This time I'm running an Intel GMA X3100, so I still don't have a great graphics card.

Few days ago I manage to have 1366x768 resolution option in my Ubuntu 12.04 (nvidia x driver), but the screen (fiscal) and the option resolution in the system settings under monitor, doesn't match each other, I have chosen 1366x768 as the option, but seems that in the screen its just show 1280x768 this is the image :

I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 on my Lenovo G575 (64 bit). I was using my computer with the 1366x768 display resolution. I changed the display resolution of my computer to the 800x600 yesterday, then I tried to return it back to 1366x768, but I couldn't. When I try to change resolution, it's getting dark and it crashes. Then nothing happens. So I need to restart to open my computer.
