When I log-in on ubuntu 12.04, the workspace switcher often seems to "remember" the last used workspace when shutting down - and it switches to that one when I start up.
I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 with Unity with 4 workspaces. Let's say I have an application, for example xterm open on the upper left workspace, however at that moment I'm in the lower left workspace. If I click on the xterm icon on the launcher, instead of opening another xterm in the workspace where I currently am, I get switched to the upper left workspace to the xterm which is already open.
I am running Xfce4 with compiz-fusion. I don't usually use a workspace switcher, but I put one in my panel -- just for you. With my Intel 915, it works just as I would expect it to. The panel appears on all desktops, and the switcher tracks the desktop I am on. It also shows open windows on the other workspaces. As I said, I usually don;t use the switcher. I have
In Cinnamon, you can move your pointer to the top left corner of the screen to activate the desktop switcher. This would be awesome...if I wasn't left-handed. I throw the pointer up there most of the time. It's massively frustrating.
Is there a way to switch it to the top-right of the screen?
I am using Gnome Classic in 11.10 and when I select a particular workspace it does not highlight it, so I do not know on which workspace I am unless I remember which one I clicked.
PS - By the way I have no problems operating the switcher, it is just the highlighting issue purely for cosmetics and ease of use.
I am new to Linux and have started with Ubuntu 12.4. I have installed CompizConfig manager, got my desk cube working and my computer is fun to be on again. But I am having issues with the workspace switcher. At first it was normal, four quadrants, one in each corner then it switched to four quadrants in one row in the middle of the screen.

I have a fresh Mint 13 Maya (MATE edition) with Compiz enabled. I also have a two-monitor set-up via NVIDEA drivers with TwinView. I have set up 4 horizontal workspaces via CompizConfig Settings Manager.
Here is the behavior I try to eliminate: I open a window, say, browser, and put it to workspace number 2.
I'm wondering if if is possible to easily change the way that the workspace switcher works.
For example if I open Firefox(or any other program), move it to a second workspace then click on the Firefox button again, Ubuntu automatically moves me to the second workspace and brings Firefox to the front.
I have been using Workspace switcher in Ubuntu just fine but recently have encountered this problem. The windows in the switcher don't fill the screen.
