You need udev for a whole lot of other stuff, so leave that aside. To automount removable media, you can just use udisks and a helper like ud{iskie,evil}.For an ntfs partition, you will also need that driver.Comparing it with the Lubuntu; I am sure there is a lot more cruft preinstalled that makes this happen.
