Why did ubuntu install break out my partitions?

Hi All,

I installed ubuntu alongside with windows 7 but I am not getting the option for ubuntu in the windows boot loader.

I have a 320 gb hard disk: C: drive - 40 gb windows has been installed on this D and E drives - 250 gb used for data

F: drive - 15 gb firstly formatted as NTFS but used gparted to change the filesyste. This is the partition I used to install ubuntu.

I first noticed an issue when trying to install Linux Mint 14 as a third OS alongside Ubuntu 12.10 and Windows 7 - I was unable to create another partition to install Mint to.

Poking around, I realised that I had reached the limit of primary partitions: (from left to right of the table) 1) a ~100 MB primary partition that I meant to use for storing Grub files but never got down to, 2) a 25 GB ext

My laptop came with Windows preinstalled. I shrank the Windows partition and created a couple of new partitions to install Ubuntu in. I've noticed that reading my Ubuntu partitions is much noisier than reading the NTFS partiion.

Hi, I'm trying to install Ubuntu on my laptop already running windows, but I just realized that a hard drive can only have 4 primary partitions (noob errors). I have a 500gb hard drive. The four partitions are the following: 1 Windows partition (450gb) with 300gb unused, a System partition from windows thats about 200mb, a 13gb partition labeled RECOVERY, and a 100mb partition labeled HP_TOOLS.

When I installed Ubuntu 12.10, I installed it onto a 500 GB hard drive using the default partitioning.

Looking at the hard drive in Disks

I see the main partition (/dev/sda1 = 496 GB) and the swap partition (/dev/sda5 = 4.3 GB). I also see another partition (/dev/sda2 = 4.3 GB), which is not mounted.

hey, i am trying to dual boot my laptop so i can have ubuntu and windows 7 running alongside each other. i have deleted the 'hp_tools' partition in windows and shrunk the 'C:' partition so i had a partition to install ubuntu on, but when i go to install ubuntu, it says there is an extra partition that is 1mb in size, with a flag of system, and the drive i created is recognized as unusable data!

I can't seem to install Ubuntu 10.04, 11.04 or 11.10. I've tried swapping out thumb drives, changing the SATA emulation from RAID to IDE/ACHI. I used GParted to pre-prepare my extended linux partition. No matter what, it seems the installer refuses to see any of my hard drive partitions. If I run it off the live CD, I can access all of said partitions.

So, this is my first time installing Ubuntu on my hard drive, and I'm running into some problems.

Until a couple of hours ago, I had 4 partitions in my hard drive:

XP, Vista and 7 installations, plus a data partition.

I backep up the XP and Vista partitions which weren't of any use lately, and booted a Live-USB with Ubuntu 12.04.
