3 years ago a co-worker setup a software RAID-6 array on Ubuntu 9.04 and I'm getting messages from the OS that the drive has bad sectors and should be replaced.
I'm new to RAID and trying to get my head around things. I have owned a Drobo in the past (which I liked) but it failed.
Here's a hypothetical scenario:
Assume I set up a RAID-5 array consisting of four 1TB hot-swappable 2.5" SATA drives. I name this volume 'My Data'.

After a restart which stalled, I did a hard reboot and now mdadm can't see the RAID 6 array anymore, LVM can't find the volume which was on that raid array.
I just finished setting up a RAID5 array with 3 new 1.5TB hard drives using mdadm. I spent the last 5 days trying to get the RAID array working. Everything is up and running now except I have not been able to share folders on this drive using Samba. I can share files in my home directory and on my NTFS drive, but not the RAID array. I am trying to access the shares from a Windows Vista PC.
How should one connect a small storage array, four 3TB SATA drives for now, to two motherboards or controllers as a failover system? This means avoiding adding another single point of failure such as a single SAN device.
Hello,
I have 3 x 1.5TB drives is a raid 5 array, at the moment the storage capacity is enough, but soon I will need to expand this. I have a spare 1.5TB drive that I am thinking about adding to the array.
So far I have read mixed articles/posts, some saying it can be done, others say it can't.
From what I understand I use:
Hi, so after recently getting into the Steam for Linux beta, I decided I would finally dual-boot my desktop. I've been using Ubuntu/Debian for some time on my laptop, but previous attempts to switch over to Linux on my desktop have been thwarted by the lack of default support for my RAID 5 array.
I have 6 1tb drives in a RAID5. 1 drive went down. On the RAID was 2 virtual machines that I really need back up and running. The spare drive I have to put in the server is a 1.5tb drive, which exceeds the physical per drive limit of the 2020SA. The drive is found in the disk utility, but it is not found in the array management section. I cannot add the drive to the array to have it rebuild.
