I 'm using fedora 17 but not used to GNOME 3 ,so I uninstalled gnome desktop environment (including GDM login manager ) . For now , when the system started, it can't enter the X-window(I'm using awesome WM without any desktop env) and the tty1 is absolutely black without any cursor or word ,thus I have to press ctrl+alt+f2 to enter tty2,then login , then issue the command : startx .....
I normally prefer my system to boot in text mode and manually start Gnome with startx but if I do that with Gnome 3.6.1, I get many errors and a basically unusable operating system. After installing gdm however, Gnome works perfectly fine again. Why is that and how can I return to my startx?
Hi!
So, I am having difficulty understanding what I need to do or if this can be done at all..
I would like to boot into the command line for my Linux system but, still have access to the different environments as well (KDE, GNOME, Enlightenment, etc) but I don't know how to do that using startx.
Hi,
I have being googling and trying to find out solution to unable to startx.
Please note i have already search from last 2-3 days for the solution but didn't found anything.
So request someone to guide me step by step.
Also one more thing, the server was crashed and i upgraded the existing server using CD.
Did that now I get an even bigger error
[root@MCSG ~]# startx
hostname: Unknown host
xauth: creating new authority file /root/.serverauth.22244

I was hoping to be able to access a Fedora 17 desktop on EC2. I launched an Amazon EC2 Fedora 17 instance, I logged in via ssh.
I ran: (I figured this would get me a desktop?

I'd like to achieve following:
no gnome-desktop
auto login a user and load .bashrc
auto startx and run my custom chromium
Now:
I'm able to start with text only, by adding "text" into /etc/default/grub
I'm able to login root, by editing /etc/init/tty1.conf (ref1)
but how to login as another user?
This question is primarily for my own education. I first tried to install Fedora 18 choosing the Gnome desktop option, but the desktop was unusable after logging in (the appearance was of a font with mostly blank characters and occasional colored backgrounds). Later, I was successful at an install with the LXDE desktop choice.
