What is the easiest way to tell RHEL5 from RHEL6 in a bash script?

http://unix.stackexchange.com – I work in an environment where we are slowly transitioning machines from Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 to RHEL 6. I need some of my scripts to do something subtly different on RHEL6 machines to what is currently being done on RHEL5 machines. The pragmatic solution is to check at runtime and run some commands on RHEL5, others on RHEL6 and some on both. A practical example of this is that we are using environment modules and my .bashrc includes a module load git line, but on RHEL6 machines this command errors: RHEL6 system, git should be installed - not loading module Looking in the modulefil (HowTos)

have a server pre-installed with RHEL5, with 12 SCSI disks being /dev/sda with RHEL5, and managed to put RHEL6 into /dev/sdc

/dev/sda is the first bootable disk on the SCSI chain..

editing /etc/grub.conf would not allow me to boot RHEL6 , the entries seem to be right..

any advices, other than going into the SCSI bios and make /dev/sdc is the first bootable SCSI disk ..

When I create a RHEL6 server using the media, it works fine. However, we want to do PXE installs.

We use cobbler at work. To import the RHEL6 dvd, I do the following:

$ sudo mount -o loop,ro rhel6-dvd.iso /media $ sudo cobbler import --path=/media/ --name=rhel-6 --arch=x86_64

The install goes through fine.

does somebody know when RHEL6 will look up. With Google you can find only rumour. Many think Q1 2010 will be the date of the resale. How does know more? Will F11, F12 or F13 be the base for RHEL6. Any news about it?

hi rhel6 gurus

i have set up a rhel6.2 db server. i have data base admins needing to connect to this rhel6 derver via reflectionx. reflectionx is set correctly but when attempting to test connectivity by 'xclock' the following message pops up : -bash:xclock; command not found.

anyone out there with some help? i installed package = xorg-apps....

I've been trying to set up a server for disk-less booting of remote machines on a network. The server host OS is RHEL6 and I have configured dhcp, tftp and nfs services which are proven to be working since I am able to install RHEL6 through pxe boot. Now I want it to serve for disk-less booting. I followed the red hat guide here.

The command thats run is

yum install httpd git php php-cli php-mysql php-process php-devel php-gd php-pecl-apc php-pecl-json mysql-server

I get these errors.
