My external USB 3 hard drive is behaving very strangely:

If I plug it into a USB 2 port, it works fine If I plug it into a USB 3 port, it doesn't work at all.

I have an big problem.

My usb-devices works if I plug them in before I start my computer. But if will plug them in after or if I plug it out and in it does not work any more.

It's really annoying. If I want something from my usb-drive or want to use external mouse I have to plug it in before my computer starts.

Please help.

Hello, I am new here, though I have been using fedora linux quite happily for the past 3 months and I am having a problem with one of my external USB hard drives by Toshiba.

I've had Ubuntu on my IBM X31 laptop for quite a while now. Its been going great, and I just upgraded to 9.10. This has gotten me thinking how I can fix some of the little problems I've been having. A couple distros back(I think 7.04) I messed with something relating to the USB.

My external hard drive is not detected when I plug it into the USB port in Ubuntu. When I dual boot windows 7 it says the drive is "corrupted and unreadable." When I looked at solutions in windows I did find one program that retrieved files but wiped out the file names. This was the best that I could find using google.
