What are the folders at the root level used for on linux? [closed]

http://unix.stackexchange.com – Possible Duplicate: How does the Linux file structure work? Long have I seen this directory listing (or others like it) when doing an ls /: bin dev home lost+found opt root sbin usr boot etc lib mnt proc run sys var I am familiar with home as the corollary to Windows' Documents and Settings folder and I think I know that mnt is where mounted devices appear. The rest I have used from time to time, but never understood definitively why one file was categorized under one folder, but another file was categorized under a different folder. Can somebody provi (HowTos)
