What are the folders at the root level used for on linux? [closed]

Long have I seen this directory listing (or others like it) when doing an ls /: bin dev home lost+found opt root sbin usr boot etc lib mnt proc run sys var I am familiar with home as the corollary to Windows' Documents and Settings folder and I think I know that mnt is where mounted devices appear. The rest I have used from time to time, but never understood definitively why one file was categorized under one folder, but another file was categorized under a different folder. Can somebody provi (HowTos)

On my harddisk I have two different linux systems which both have a own home partition. For about two weeks I used symbolic links from my fedora 18 home partition to my salix home partition. A few days it worked without issues. Folders I symlinked were Documents, Video, Music and .liferea_1.8 folder. But now I cannot mount my Salix home parititon properly.

I am helping my dad with his computer and he has the messiest folder organisation imaginable.

Would it be possible to create a script which moves all images not in the Pictures folder to pictures, all documents not in Documents to Documents, videos to Videos etc?

I have used openSuse 11.1 KDE for a long time but I wanted to give GNOME a try. So I installed openSuse 11.2 GNOME and copied all my home files back to my home folder. But by default, GNOME used Documenten instead of Documents so I moved all my Documents to Documenten and removed the folder Documents.

My layout is as follows.

LVM Setup: /dev/VG/Documents, /dev/VG/Music, /dev/VG/Pictures, /dev/VG/Music, /dev/VG/Documents, etc....

Each of the LVMs is bind mounted to the corresponding folder name in /home/foo.

Hello all. I am still somewhat new to linux.

I dual boot backtrack 5 R3 and ubuntu 13.04. During the installation of ubuntu I chose to encrypt the home folder now whenever I boot backtrack and I need a file that's on Documents or any folder of the Home Folder of the ubuntu partition it won't let me and I don't know how to fix that!!

My Application has a folder structure like

/PNRPHD1/ex1/11.txt

/PNRPHD1/ex1/ex2/11.txt

/PNRPHD1/ex1/ex2/ex3/23.txt

/PNRPHD1/ex1/ex2/34.txt

but /PNRPHD1 is main folder, within that folder I need to iterate every time and go to the last level and check if the file exists or not,in that Directory or not, if File is the content of directory, then i need to bu
