WebOS Swings Along the Open Road

http://www.linuxinsider.com – When HP announced late last year that it would open source webOS, it was hard not to be skeptical. After all, it would be all too easy for a company to whitewash its own abandonment of a project by grandly "donating it to the community." However, that pessimistic view is beginning to fade, thanks to HP's publication last month of an official road map for its webOS plans, including the inclusion of a mainline kernel by March and ongoing involvement from HP itself. Are webOS's prospects looking a little brighter now? That's what Linux bloggers have been trying to figure out. (General)

From LinuxBSDos.com.News flash: LG Acquires webOS from HP to enhance its line of Smart TVs. Now we can ad LG to the list of companies that have been associated with the webOS, one of the more promising, but, so far, disappointing cross-platform operating systems.

HP’s TouchPad and Palm phones are dead, but webOS continues to enjoy some kind of existence as open-source technology. Following an initial beta release back at the end of August, Open webOS graduates to a 1.0 release today. Announced via blog post, the new release offers some changes that the Open webOS team hopes will usher in major new capabilities for developers.

saw the post over on xda with open webos on the galaxy nexus, and almost a year ago there was a proof of concept of webos on the evo 3d

that being said, this post is dedicated to discussions and plannings (pretty much anything webos related) for the evo 3d.

I wasn’t always the Android fanatic that I am today, I originally started as a strong supporter of webOS. When webOS died about a year ago, I was a little sad to see the card based OS go. Now it seems that webOS has found a comfortable home as an open source community project.

Open webOS 1.0 was released yesterday. And no, that is not an edition you can just download and install on anything. It is for developers, not for everybody – at least not yet. This is a milestone release in the short history of Open webOS, the open source edition of what used to be webOS, the operating system for the HP Touchpad and Pre and Pixi smartphones.

I boot into webos n I says update I believe webos 3.0.5 but it won't install....

My ideal dream for this is to have WebOS running on my touchpad but able to run android software. I love how well WebOS runs but hate that there is no software and I haven't really been happy with my multi-boot android situation.

HP released its WebOS 3.0 software development kit (SDK), which takes advantage of new features available on the recently announced HP TouchPad tablet. Meanwhile, HP's new CEO Leo Apotheker offered more details on how HP plans to spread WebOS across multiple devices and establish partnerships with smaller companies to expand the Linux-based platform....

We need to face facts: WebOS is dead. Barring the unwavering support of the enthusiast community, the former mobile OS will never become a commercial product and, LG investment or no, the possibility of WebOS surviving a sale is nil. WebOS is no more, has ceased to be, is bereft of life, and it rests in peace. It is an ex-OS. HP is going through the same doldrums all PC makers are facing.
