Webcam works with guvcview and fswebcam but not in other programs

/me can confirm this exact behaviour ^^somtimes it crashes instantly, sometimes it crashes after playing a song, and, rarely, it keeps working for long periods of time (although i did have it crash once even after it had played flawlessly for an entire album).

I have the same issue with a Toshiba z835 (intel graphics "2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller" according to lshw).
