While I still highly recommend VLC media player as one of the best for any system because of its wide range of playable formats and open source nature, it certainly isn’t the only media player worthy of your time. In fact, most of the popular Linux distributions come with a very worthy media player which can play a decent amount of formats and is rather simple to use. While I wouldn’t say it’s better than VLC, it does remove the need to install VLC unless you require a very specific feature. About (General)

Have got an old laptop I’d like to use a dedicated media player. Its got modest specs, having 1. 1 Ghz processor and 256-512 mb ram. I’d like to be able to turn it on, and as soon as possible, have a media player with a media library available. I was assuming a linux distro would be most appropriate, but which one?

I want to watch a number of trailers and make notes inbetween each one. So, instead having them play one after the other without stopping, I want each one to automatically stop once it's done, and then I'll hit a key to play the next one in the playlist.

How do I do this?

(I have Movie Player (aka Totem) and VLC Media Player. I would prefer not to install another media player unless I have to.)

It's difficult to talk about the Gxine multimedia player as a separate app from Xine. Both do pretty much the same tasks -- let you watch videos and listen to audio files. Both of these apps hale from the same Linux library of codecs and other gutsy stuff, Xine-lib.
