This is a follow-on to How can I grow a 3Ware 9650SE RAID1 under ESXi 5.0?
I've successively replaced 1TB drives in my RAID1 with 2TB drives hoping that I can grow the datastore I've got in ESXi 5.0.
I am having a problem with on of our ESXi servers and hoping someone can help us resolve it. I just installed ESXi on a server with 2 2TB drives that are in a RAID 1 configuration using an Adaptec 2405 RAID Controller.
In my last questions I didn't make myself clear, so I will do my best to explain it.
I have a server with esxi 5 installed on it. I am not able to setup hardware raid atm, and need a workaround.
From previous question I have been told to setup a raid for guest-os (don't confuse with hardware/software raid for/on host).
I'm having trouble with ESXi backup/restore performance.
My setup:
VMWare ESXi 5.0.0 on a HP ProLiant DL 360 G6, runnnig RAID 5 on a P410 SmartArray as SAS
QNAP Nas (QNAP TS-809U-RP NAS 8 bays 4USB)
Connected over Gigabit
I try to copy a 200 GB file from the NAS to the Datastore. Currently, it will take 10 hours, so the speed is about 5 MB/s.
We have recently bought a "white box" server to run VMware ESXi 5.0 (we're planning to use the vSphere 5 Essentials Kit). According to VMware's Compatibility Guide, the server's LSI Logic MegaRAID SAS 9260-4i RAID controller is compatible (support type listed as "inbox").
I've got as far as installing ESXi 5.0 on the host, and I've also installed the vCenter Server Appliance.
I have the following:
2 x DL585 G1 (8 cores) with built in Smart Array 5i (2 x 74GB SCSI in Raid 0)
I installed VMware ESXi 5 and got it all working :)
However I need more space.
I was thinking of getting 2 x P600 which I can install in the DL585 G1 however I am not sure if it will support SATA drives. It does states, SAS online.
I have ESXi 5.1 running on a standalone box. On another server, I have Windows 2008 R2 installed and it has a 1 TB partition free. Both are on the same network. I am a complete noob to VMWare and I'd like to know the easiest way to use that 1 TB partition as a datastore/available resource on my ESXi server.
Will I have to convert the entire Windows 2008 R2 server using VMWare converter?
We recently bought a new server that came with 2 600GB disks in a Raid 1 and 5 2TB disks in a raid 5. Initially this was going run Windows Server 2008 R2, however, it was decided to now run VMware vsphere 5. After I installed, I only see 1 datastore (the 2 600GB disks) in the vSphere client. Is it possible to add the other raid array as a datastore?
Upgrade/Migrate VMware ESX / ESXi 4.* To ESXi 5.0
VMware has recently released its new VM hypervisor product, VMware
ESXi 5.0. VMware is replacing its current ESX model with ESXi and the
biggest change (between ESX and ESXi) is the architecture, as most of
you VM gurus are well aware of, but for the people that don't know I
will quickly explain.
