VGA-->HDMI Converter Box only does 4:3. I want it to do 16:10. Is it possible to force the resolution?

http://askubuntu.com – I purchased a Monoprice VGA-->HDMI adapter (my Thinkpad X201 laptop only has VGA out). 12.04 displays via the box, but only gives me the option of 800 x 600, or 1024 x 768. Straight VGA cable to an external monitor would give me 1920 x 1200. Is there a way for me to force the external connected HDMI (through the converter box) to display at higher resolution? the box is capable of running at this resolution. (HowTos)

I am having trouble setting the correct resolution on my external monitor via HDMI

I have the gen3 Sandy Bridge processor with an Nvidia card. After I installed the Nvidia driver I got 640x800 resolution on my laptop monitor, but was able to set 1080p on my external monitor.

I have a Dell Inspiron 4000, 900 Mhz Pentium III, 192 MB RAM,10.1 GB disk running Lubuntu 12.04. When I start the computer, and I check the display resolution, Monitor Settings claims that the max resolution is 1024x768.

I have a video and audio converter that converts to HDMI input on the TV. It works well, EXCEPT the default and maximum resolution is 1024x768.

I am tiring to change my resolution to 1202x670. I have tried everything I found on the net from XrandR to ArandR even installed a package called Resolution Switcher, but to no avail. Now the reason I need such a bazaar resolution size is because I am running an old Samsung T.V.

I want to use my external monitor's resolution fully (2560x1440) with a USB display adapter for my laptop.

I know there are issues with this, but I haven't heard of a resolution. And some of the suggestions just confuse me.

I have a Dell XPS with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M with Optimus running Precise Pangolin.

I've installed bumblebee and the everything works pretty well, EXCEPT for my HDMI port to my external monitor. I use this for a dual monitor with the laptop screen as my primary.
