Very basic command line question

http://askubuntu.com – I'm very new to Ubuntu (and Linux). I forgot my main password and looked up how to delete it and now I'm at a root menu screen that says "-d, --delete". My question is what do I actually need to type at the command prompt? Typding "d" "-d" and all other variations I could think of didn't work. I'm pretty sure there's some code/shorthand here that I'm not familiar with. The instructions didn't work for me because when I typed "passwd Andrew" it came back with a list of commands instead of asking for a new password. One of the command options on the list that came up was the one to delete the p (HowTos)
