Despite spending years optimizing games for the Windows platform, Valve get its flagship Left 4 Dead 2 title running faster on Linux.
Valve has launched on Steam for Linux most of their games, but the important ones, like Left 4 Dead or Half-Life 2, haven’t made an appearance yet.Even if Valve’s fans are happy because they’re playing most of their favorite games, people have started to wonder why other titles, like the ones from the Left 4 Dead franchise, can’t be played.
In a new blog post, Valve Linux team has reported that Left 4 Dead 2 runs faster on Linux than Windows, thanks to efficiency of Linux Kernel and OpenGL.
They tested the game on an Intel Core i7 3930k computer with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 and 32 GB RAM (loaded with Windows 7 Service Pack 1 64-bit and Ubuntu 12.04 32bit).
When Left 4 Dead 2 was initially ported to Linux, it ran at 6 fps

The big problem that is holding back Linux is games. People dont realize how critical games are in driving consumer purchasing behavior. We want to make it as easy as possible for the 2,500 games on Steam to run on Linux as well. Its a hedging strategy. I think Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space.
Most of the gamers just stick on to Windows Vista because they think of games ie. the real GAMES only go with windows!. Well that is a misconception! There are also many smart games with quality Graphics and also many opensource funny games. The greatest fact about this is everything is free!!. Well many people does not even think of the possobility of games in linux!. Well I did!!
Valve CEO Gabe Newell recently slammed Microsoft's Windows 8 saying that is kind of a catastrophe for everybody in the PC space.
