Hi,
I'm trying to remove unity from a ubuntu desktop, and later install MATE.
I tried to remove the following packages:
For 11.10
(per http://askubuntu.com/questions/6302/...u-remove-unity)
Code:

I have a very strange problem: the "Applications" lens does not appear in unity dash. The unity-lens-application and unity-places-applications packages are installed, i tried also unity --reset but that didn't help.
I wrote an QT-application, which shows a "QTreeWidget" of a certain directory
and its sub-directories.
Now I would like to make unity open a folder e.g. /home/Username/,
by clicking one of the applications "QTreeWidgetItems".
Unfortunately i don't know how the communication between Unity and the Qt-app works.
Can somebody tell me how that could be done ?
Thank you,

I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit and it was all fine until last week. Now, there are several problems that I'm encountering:
I cannot change my desktop background.
Application lens is installed, but no applications are shown in the dash.
Following are the things I've tried:
Installing unity-place-applications and unity-place-files.

Am I right? Can I run Unity standalone on a fedora PC or even in Ubuntu 10.04 etc as a portable application?

Hey guys!
Why is Ubuntu 13.04 still using Unity 6.6.0 when Ubuntu 12.10 has Unity 6.8.0?(Or some other version) I created a USB with a persistent space on it. Installed all of the Ubuntu 13.04 updates, and it was still on Unity 6.6.0. Since Unity 6.8.0 was released all the way back in October it seems like we should have the latest Unity version.
