I am using Ubuntu 11.10 which was working fine till today.
If I try to login using one of my user accounts it directs me back to the login screen, which is followed by a black screen.
I am sure the password I enter is correct because if the password is wrong it prompts "Invalid Password".
On the other hand I am able to login using a root or guest account.
I did a manual update of my nvidia geforce 560 card from 304 to 310. The display was sporadically going blank for a few seconds, so I thought a driver update would resolve that issue. Everything went well, except now when I log in as my normal self, the login screen goes blank like it is trying to log me into my normal environment, and poof, I'm back at the login screen.

Thanks in advance for any help. Ubuntu 12.04
Up until recently my mother has been using the Guest Session when she logs on; now, the Guest Session will not login.
In trying out different distros, I've been using the same /home partition to keep my login the same. Was on Mint for a while. Just tried Fuduntu and not caring for it, I installed Xubuntu 12.04.
Problem is that when I go to login with my same old user name, it appears to accept my credentials and initiate the login.
New install of 12.04.1 and the user established during install cannot login.
I was able to create an new user by entering the system as guest. Ubuntu accepted the sudo password of the first user to establish the new user; but I cannot login as the user established during install. The newly created user does have admin permission and I can login using that user and do sudo stuff.
Hi, I'm a new arch user. I followed archwiki to install Enlightenment17. All went fine but I have a problem to login since during setup I inserted '@' in root/regular user passwords. During setup I selected the Italian layout and all seems ok, except grafical login through entrance (from aur, but I tested also kdm, with same results): password not recognized.
I am unable to get past the login screen. It won't accept passwords, the screen momentarily goes black, and then returns to the login screen.
I recently found out that you can use CTRL-ALT-F1 to switch from the login screen to the command line. My password works in that situation and I was able to enter terminal mode.
I typed in "startx" to see what would happen.
every account every option I try. when I login, it just cycles back to the login screen. I have attempted to do a repair install, but to no avail. it happens when I try to boot normally or if I boot into failsafe. any ideas
