I am working on an Ubuntu 12.04 installation that has recently started misbehaving. It is used by multiple people at an office, so it's possible someone messed things up (although the only user who is an administrator is pretty smart and keeps things updated).
Synaptic and the likes are giving me this error:
You have 1 broken package on your system.
I have tried to use the fix broken packages option but Synaptic simply crashes. It seems that Firefox 17.0.1 is the package causing all the issues.
So I tried to use sudo apt-get -f install firefox
and received these errors
$ sudo apt-get -f install firefox

I usually have different instances of my web browsers to attend to various types of usages, on Windows that means using portable versions of Chrome and Firefox. The existing portable versions of Firefox and Chromium for Linux are outdated and lack immediate support, compared with the portable apps for Windows.

I installed PPA package for BITdefender but somehow the package got broken. Because of this I was not able to boot Ubuntu in normal mode. So i booted in recovery mode and completely removed the broken package using synaptic package manager. But even after removing the broken package I'm unable to boot in normal mode. Everytime i try to boot in normal mode I'm greeted with a black screen!
I have recently made a webpage using a microsoft based software, why is that everytime I check the GUI of the html file using ubuntu's web browsers(firefox and chrome) it's always broken, like some textboxes are misaligned, headers are too short or too long. I've checked it using an iphone's safari, windows based laptop's web browers(firefox and chrome).
Fedora 17 appears to have 2 broken packages in it - according to Synaptic Package Manager. I've sourced Fedora 17 from a Linux Format live DVD (LXF 160) - and found the broken packages when I couldn't get LibreOffice 3.5.7 to function.
