https://bbs.archlinux.org – You probably have your usb control set to 'auto' which certainly saves power, but can do things like this. I have been reading reports recently of this happening to many people. I think you should try determining what port your usb device is plugged in to and then make sure that it is not being set to auto by laptop-mode-tools.
