Hey everyone. Im building a new gaming computer, which I plan to dual boot with XP (for gaming) and Ubuntu (for work.)
Here's The list of parts, I wanted someone other than myself who knows computers to give it a once over for compatibility. Also I'm not too familiar with power supplies, my current computer has one built into the case, but the case I am going to use doesn't
I'm going to be building a new system this winter as a replacement for my dell laptop-turned-desktop which has a twice broken screen, slowly dying HDD, and slowly dying USB. This'll be my first time building a computer...
My goal:
I am new to Ubuntu, the desktop that it(Ubuntu) is installed on does not have a cd drive yet. I think I have found one on newegg but i am worried that it will not be supported by Ubuntu because it is not listed in the compatibility section. Here is the link if someone could check it out and tell me if it will work.
This usb adapter is not working with ubuntu 10.04 64 bit! Please someone tell me what to do! I used ndisk, and it has the latest driver, now, but no networks show up on the menu! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-187-_-Product

I am making new a Desktop for Ubuntu 9.10 and some Windows 7 usage probably in Virtualbox :).
My main goal is to build a budget computer for around $600, but I may go a little higher. It's main function will be storage & general usage and some gaming (with wine not windows :)).
Here's my list:
I want to build a very parallel (at least 24 cores) AMD opteron (bulldozer) system.
I'm looking at some motherboards and I can't figure out if they're UMA or NUMA (uniform memory access vs non-uniform memory access.)
Are most multi-socket motherboards one or the other architecture?
Here are two I was looking at:
Quad socket Tyan:

I need to get a new power supply as my last one blew up and would like to get some recommendations. Personal experience is very welcome here, so if you've got a power supply that has been working for you for a very long time I would love to hear about it.
I plan on building a new desktop that will run ubuntu. I am new to ubuntu, I use it on my netbook, which I have been using exclusively due to my desktop getting old and the video card going out.
