unable to password braeak by rescue mode in RHEL 4.4

I want to increase the journaling size of an EXT3 FS: /var. I booted up a RHEL 5.8 DVD, and tried the "linux rescue" mode. The problem is that the original install that has the mentioned /var FS is in a vg/lvm.

I am trying to restore RHEL OS (5.3.1.1) from network, where we have VLANs configured on our switches. So the only way to get to shared folder on remote server with backup image is to configure VLAN.

I booted a machine with Red Hat Recovery CD and ran linux rescue. But in this mode there is no VLAN support.

Rescue mode is accessible from the installation media (CD#1 or DVD) just as the documentation says. The LiveCD isn't an installation disc and it doesn't support rescue mode. [by markkuk]

I need to extend the root (/) partition of a RHEL linux. I know I can do this without too much difficulty by booting in rescue mode. The problem is : the RHEL is a virtual machine running in vSphere ESXi 5.1 environment. I thought I could easily mount a image of the installation cd in the virtual CD/DVD drive and boot in rescue mode from there, but I can't get it to boot from the cd.

I tried removing my administrator account's password. Now that there is no password set for it, I cannot put a new one nor do any actions which needs administrator privileges.

I tried different fixes found on askubuntu, including resetting of password using recovery mode.

If you forgot your ubuntu user password,or you have enabled root user and forgot the password,you can try following to reset the forgotten password. First,start your machine and when it boots into grub menu,select “Ubuntu GNU Linux …. (recovery mode)” (just use up/down arrow key to highlight it,not press enter).

I am unable to SSH into an existing ESXi server. I have a user which is in the "root" and "users" group and is able to connect via vSphere. However after enabling "Remote support (SSH)", attempting to connect by putty and entering my username/password when prompted I am presented with an "Access Denied" message.

I have run through the options presented at this KB article to no avail.
