I want to change my colour depth. I posted this, and got the following answer:
Create an xorg.conf file by running Xorg -configure. Then edit the Depth entry in the Display subsection of the Screen section.
You can start an X server with a non-default depth by running e.g.
I have no xorg.conf file in either /etc/X11 or /usr/share/X11 & I need to make some changes to get my tablet working.I try running:Xorg -configure& I get this in return:Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.

I've installed ubuntu faunty and the restricted (propietary) driver and verything works fine. I can even enable compiz-fusion and play some games like savage 2 and it works fine. My problem is that i can't get a 1600x1200 reolution for my desktop (or anywhere else I've tried).
Most distributions configure your graphics card and display automatically, but xorg.conf is still well worth fiddling with. It's a text file that contains all the configurations details required by the X server to deliver a graphical display and provide a connection between your keyboard, your mouse, and the computer.
I installed ubuntu 12.04 on my computer and I have a matrox g550, but I have the problem my dual display is clone.
How do I get dual display without being clone?
I tried to make one xorg.conf from X -configure and put that file in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ and put in this file option xinerama on, but didn't work.

Using Applications->System->Configuration->Configure X11 System (which brings up SaX2), I configured a 2nd monitor to have a resolution of LCD 1280 x 768 (WXGA) @ 60 Hz. The second monitor was also configured to be an extended desktop, not a clone.
I have a desktop machine, a bit old Intel Core 2 4400 (64bit), with nVidia GeForce 7900, two Iiyamas, one 2403, one 2202.
The problem is that everything works fine under Live version -- the display applet sees both monitors and is able to recognise them and sets the resolution properly.
