I'd like to fully install Ubuntu 12.10 onto a 16GB USB 3.0 flash drive, not create a live USB but to treat the flash drive as an external hard drive. I've read it's possible and I know my computer can boot from it. However, it doesn't work when I try. I've booted a Live USB from another flash drive and installed Ubuntu onto the 16GB one.
This is my problem. I burned Ubuntu 11.10 iso to a CD. I was able to boot my PC with it. I plugged in my flash drive, and inserted the CD and restarted the computer to boot Ubuntu.
I then chose to install Ubuntu alongside with Windows (XP prof.). Then I was able to select my flash drive as the installation location.
I have an Alienware m17x R1 computer with dual Nvidia geforce 260m graphics cards and 1 Nvideo 9400, 16GB Ram, 1 750GB drive (Drive C) and 1 500GB drive (Drive D).
I spent 2-days doing a new install of Win-7, reinstalling all my apps, and tuing the system so it was fast and reliable.
Ok, so I was testing out Ubuntu on my old computer using a USB flash drive, and there was an install button. After testing Ubuntu, decided I liked it, I opened up the installation program, installed it, and rebooted.
Today I tried to install Ubuntu 11.10 x64 to my Sony Vaio F13 series.
The problem is, Windows is installed to the C: drive of my computer. However, when I choose to install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7, ubuntu recommended me to install to D: drive.
After I installed Ubuntu, there is no option to boot in Ubuntu. It just boots into Windows 7 which I do not want to.
Welcome back to the daring adventures of TalkUbuntu! Here is the lowdown:
I am trying to install Ubuntu 64-bit alongside Windows 8 32-bit. I have burned multiple discs with Ubuntu 64-bit and 32-bit and I mounted the .iso file to a USB flash drive. I went into bios and changed the boot preference to CD/DVD when I was attempting to boot from the DVDs and removable drive when I was attempting to boot from the flash drive.

from the USB stick. But if I remove it and boot again, Window 7 should boot. Well it doesn't. Seems like the hard disk is not there any more. Must have done something wrong while installing Ubuntu. My laptop is an Acer Aspire 1410 without a DVD reader.
The USB flash drive is a 64G Sandisk Cruzer.
