Hello there,
Its been 2 or 3 days now I am hunting for a solution to this problem, My computer is running on Backtrack 5 R2 (GNOME).
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on an LG laptop. I'm connecting to my home wireless network with WEP encryption.
The default Network Manager handles this fairly well. However, I prefer using Wicd, since it starts scanning for networks at boot time, saving me an annoying wait after I log in.
I wanted to share the problems I ran into while switching, and how to avoid them.
I have a TP-LINK WN821N and two computers, both with 12.04 LTS and 12.04.2 LTS. The computer with 12.04 does not have graphical environment, I tried network-manager but did not work so I installed wicd (with wicd-cli and wicd-curses).
I've been using WICD on my eeepc 1005HA and have been able to connect to my wireless network flawlessly. Today I was unable to connect until I noticed that both WICD and Network-Manager were trying to make the connection - seemingly fighting for control. The problem was resolved when I killed network-manager (followed by a "chkconfig network-manager off" to keep it that
I've been using Wicd since the release of the betas of Intrepid and really rate it highlyFeatures includeNo Gnome dependencies (although it does require GTK), so it is easy to use in XFCE, Fluxbox, Openbox, Enlightenment, etc.Ability to connect to wired and wireless networksProfiles for each wireless network and wired networkMany encryption schemes, some of which include WEP/WPA/WPA2 (and you
I've been reading some stuff on using wicd as opposed to nm, in relation to a problem another forum user had posted.
It's suggestion was the removal of the network-manager package, and installation of the wicd package.
WELL. I can't find any network-manager package in my system to remove or even tinker with :/ All I could find was nm-applet.
I have an HP Pavilion Slimline s3100n and I cannot for the life of me get the wifi to connect and stay connected in any circumstances with network manager or wicd... I'm pulling my freaking hair out with this, and I can't get a dang thing down AT ALL... switching to wicd didn't work, putting my password in the connections editor didn't work... nothing at all is working...
Hi, first time post but have been lurking on the forums for about a couple of months now and its a WEALTH of information. For that, thank you all.
Im running BT5R2 Ubuntu 10.04 gnome 64 on samsung series 5, and wicd will connect to WPA/WPA2 and even open networks...however it wont with WEP. My home WPA network is no problem and so are open networks.
I'm currently using WICD, which I switched to after network manager was unable to retain a wireless connection for more than 10 minutes at a time.
Using WICD, my connection has been stable for months, and I've had no problems connecting to my network using WPA2.
