I have tried two ways for sharing a folder on Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit so that I could access it on a Windows XP PC on the same switch:
1st: right-clicking the folder > properties > share > Share this folder and checking both "Allow others to create and delete files in this folder" and "Guest access (for people without a user account)"
2nd: adding the folder to Samba

Hi everyone, Running ubuntu 10.04 I set up personal file sharing by going to System->Preferences->Personal File Sharing and clicking enable. I then installed Samba, and installed apache and dnssd. I then right clicked on my folder i wanted to share selected Sharing Options and clicked share folder. It worked beautifully and after a reboot could access the folder from my other machine.
Hi Folks
I just installed a new HDD Raid in my Ubuntu 12.04 box, and that went fine. But I am trying to share this drive, which is mounted at /mnt/data, to my entire network, and it is giving me errors when trying to write to the directory.
I followed the steps here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/server...ileserver.html
and my folder is setup exactly as above, but I can't write it to.
Hi, I've upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 to Ubuntu 10.10 recently. My problem is when I share a folder, that folder is still shared, but nautilus close immediately. This is very annoying because when I copying a file then share a folder, my copy operation ends, too. Can anyone help me, please?
P.S. I didn't have this issue in Ubuntu 10.04. Sorry for my bad English :(
Hi,
I am trying to create a SMB share in Ubuntu 10.04. I am right clicking on a folder, clicking 'Sharing Options', and then enabling the share.
I've got virtualbox installed on my Ubuntu 11.10 host. I've got ubuntu 10.04 as a guest. All is well.
Now I want to share a folder from the host to the guest. BLARGH! There is nothing that I cannot overly-complicate.
I'm in the user group. I can see the shared folder, but I get this:
Code:
You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "sf_folder".
Grr...
Hi All,
I used to have a thread in this forum bookmarked for creating/sharing a folder on a network for ALL USER access. I vaguely recall that I could create a folder, and then run a CHOWN and CHMOD command to make it accessible by everyone.
I am using a Ubuntu 10.04 Live USB. Its running on a 8gb flash drive. My system also has a 1tb hard drive which I want to share over the network. I managed to share the default Documents folder which is in the USB drive. But I am unable to share any folder on the 1tb drive. I am not able to change the permission settings on the folder properties.
Kindly advice me.
