[ubuntu] Why does my NVIDIA 9800 GTX+ have bad performance on Ubuntu?

http://ubuntuforums.org – Ok here is the deal. I have been running this video card fine on Vista and Windows 7 flawlessly. The reason I say this is so that you don't think the card is damaged or that the rest of my computer could not handle it. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 and installed the drivers manually. The card seems to run perfectly fine until I actually play a game. Granted... I have only tried it on one game (Heroes of Newerth) but this game can run natively on Linux. When I play this game the card graphics seem to skip and the graphics themselves seem as if they are being limited. Is this expected in Ubuntu(I doubt it)? Is it a configuration issue? Or could it be the driver I installed? More info: I have a trip core processor and I ram running the 9.10 64-bit version on it with the 64-bit drivers from the Nvidia website. I have 3GB of RAM.
