I would have thought that the graphical update-manager could be reproduced from the terminal commands:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade -y
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -y
yet I can run these commands at the terminal and despite seeing lots of things get upgraded then open the gui update-manager immediately afterwards and see that it has a list of updates it wants me to apply. Why is this?
I am a recent Fedora convert coming from Ubuntu. I can manage to get around Fedora with no problems, but there are still a few things erking me...
Is there any difference between using update manager from main menu and using the commands
Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
from a terminal?

No facility exists in Update Manager (12.04) to upgrade to 12.10. Why?
I am running Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 (Precise) and I updated all of my packages in the included "Update Manager" that comes with Ubuntu. It told me to restart my computer, so I did that.
I have a fully updated version of ubuntu 12.10 and am unable to start the "Software Updater" application, but am able to start the "Ubuntu Software Centre". I have tried $ sudo aptitude install update-manager and have also tried launching the update manager from the terminal using gksudo.
One of our laptops is still running Ubuntu 8.04. The update manager says that the 8.10 upgrade is available, but I would like to upgrade it to 9.04 missing the 8.10 step using the update manager, not the 9.04 disk. Can this be done? I will of course, backup all the obvious files and folders.
Hello all,
I am beginning to use Ubuntu 12.02, and I have problems with the Update Manager and the software center (I guess something must be wrong with my repository list...).
The update Manager freezes when I click on install updates (and gives me lots of suggestions even though I regularly run apt-get upgrade and apt-get update), and the software center just won't start (it just shows a g

Hi;
I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my Samsung Chronos laptop. My upgrade manager is set to run each Friday. A couple of weeks ago, and today, Update Manager lists quite a few KDE related packages it wants to update. I do not use KDE. I decided at the outset I would try out Unity for a while, and it turned out that I liked it quite a bit.
Is KDE required in some way?
