[ubuntu] Unity won't launch after 12.10 installation

http://ubuntuforums.org – Hi, After a new installation of 12.10 on a Lenovo x120e and a restart the Unity shell won't launch. Installation of 12.10 amd64 yesterday went well. I turned the computer off for the night and when I turned it on this morning I was presented with the login screen. When I enter the password the screen flashes black and returns to the login screen. I'm using the right password because if I enter an incorrect one a message in red font tells me so and the login screen remains. If I choose guest access the computer brings me to the desktop but without the unity shell. A right click wil (Hardware)

I have been using Ubuntu 12.04 for a few months now, but have now come across a problem that I can't get past.

I am stuck at the log on screen: I enter my password but a black screen flashes up and the log on prompt reappears.

I tried using the terminal and I actually have managed to login- but not using the main log on screen. I can't get my desktop active as the log on prompt is there.

Hi I installed GNOME shell and now I can't login after restarting the computer. It brings up the login screen and I can enter my password, but it just goes back to the login screen. I would like to stop GDM and run X -config to see if that straightens out the problem. Suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance

I´ve been using Ubuntu 11.10 for a couple of months without any problem. However i´m now unable to log in. It happened after i installed Sophos Antivirus. The system got awfully slow after the installation so i tried to shut my laptop down. The system then refused to shut down (nothing happened) so i performed a hard reset.

I think I just ruined my family's computer!

I am using Ubuntu 11.10 which was working fine till today.

If I try to login using one of my user accounts it directs me back to the login screen, which is followed by a black screen.

I am sure the password I enter is correct because if the password is wrong it prompts "Invalid Password".

On the other hand I am able to login using a root or guest account.

i've tried to install opensuse 11.2, and i got a really annoying problem:

after the installation ends, and then the automatic configuration ends, i get a black screen for very very long time. if i restart my PC, then i get to a text screen with lots of failures on the list, and in the end:

This question is usually responded to with "Liveuser does not need a password".

Well believe it or not in some configuration it is not possible to go passed the login screen of Fedora 11 or 12 KDE.

If you just hit enter which should work, it goes black with a blue flasy thing and then back to the login screen.

I'm a Ubuntu newbie. So please excuse if this is a silly question.

I am unable to get past the login screen. It won't accept passwords, the screen momentarily goes black, and then returns to the login screen.

I recently found out that you can use CTRL-ALT-F1 to switch from the login screen to the command line. My password works in that situation and I was able to enter terminal mode.

I typed in "startx" to see what would happen.
