All my icons har gone from Unity 3D, but present in Unity 2D. The icon for the Dash is also gone. All icons are present IN the dash, but when I add them to Unity the icon is suddenly invisble.
Everything works in Unity 2D.
I have a very strange problem: the "Applications" lens does not appear in unity dash. The unity-lens-application and unity-places-applications packages are installed, i tried also unity --reset but that didn't help.
My dash is completely empty. The alt-f2 run screen load applications if I type in the commands. But the others are completely empty on my own profile. In a guest profile, they work as expected.
I've read the other similar questions and tried both of these options.
I would like to know the command (from the Terminal) which opens the Unity dash, the reason being I want to create a desktop icon that starts the dash instead of the 'Windows Key' for keyboard-free use of the computer (I miss the old Ubuntu-Tweak effect where putting your mouse to the corner of the desktop would reveal Expo or Scale effects - by the way, is it possible to get it back?)

Hey guys,
When I click on the Dash Home icon in my launcher, it shows the arrow saying that it is opened, but, it doesn't display it on the seen. Coincidentally this only started when I put my laptop to sleep for the night. It was working fine before that.
I am running ubuntu 12.04 on an IBM thinkpad t42. I just installed gnome and cinnamon but I am still using unity the only problem is that in dash when I search for an application they don't appear. I don't see recent applications either
I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit and it was all fine until last week. Now, there are several problems that I'm encountering:
I cannot change my desktop background.
Application lens is installed, but no applications are shown in the dash.
Following are the things I've tried:
Installing unity-place-applications and unity-place-files.
So i recently upgraded to 12.04 from my stable 10.04. I sort of like the idea of the dash and HUD because i can keep my hands on the keyboard more. It's especially faster when I know what I'm looking for (if im just browsing or i only know the category its slower... I have to go to applications, then filter, then scroll...
When using Unity2D, most of the programs on the dash don't work. If I click on an icon e.g. VLC Media Player, the dash disappears and then nothing else happens (i.e. program does not start). The ones on the sidebar do.
(Unity Unity3D and Gnome Classic all the launchers work fine).
How can I fix the programs on the dash in unity2d?
