Have been running Ubuntu on my desktop since 9.something... now on 11.04, but have not done any updates for a LONG time... I saw Unity and decided I wanted no part of that! I have a laptop that I installed Xubuntu 12.04 on, and like the Xubuntu MUCH better than Ubuntu... So, decided that I would put Xubuntu on the desktop.
I bought a Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 today. It came with Ubuntu 11.10 preinstalled. I tried it out, but it's something terrible. First of all, it's pure Unity without gnome 2 or even gnome 3 (only Unity/Unity 2D). I was unable to find synaptic, but somehow opened a terminal and tried to install ubuntu-desktop and xubuntu-desktop, but first is installed already and second is not found.
Hi.
I am currently using the Ubuntu 11.10 on Gnome-fallback mode.
I did this:
cd /usr/share/xsessions
sudo rm LXDE.desktop
sudo rm xubuntu.desktop
sudo rm xfce.desktop
I installed LXDE and xubuntu-desktop using the Ubuntu Software Center. I don't see the option to select either one in the Ubuntu Greeter.

Make Gnome look like Unity
Hello All,
On my previous installation of Ubuntu 12.04 I was using the gnome classic desktop(no effects), but it looked and functioned just like unity 2d.
I would use unity 2d but the video playback is choppy in full screen, this is an older laptop, gnome no effects does not have this issue.
